Maybe you woke up today and felt like skipping your workout. And yesterday…and the day before that….and last week…or the last year…perhaps five years? Hey, no judgement. I’ve been there, and I’m there right now. It’s been three weeks since I ran my first marathon. Have I been running since? Not one step. Have I hit my goal on my FitBit in the last 20 days? Nope. Have I been to the gym consistently? I can count on one hand how many times I’ve seen the inside of the gym in the past few weeks. I’m feeling pretty unmotivated as of late. Fitness is about balance, and it is about consistency. I’ve worked hard to have good habits, so I don’t want to just toss all that down the drain, but honestly, I’m just not feeling it.
Do any of you feel the same? If so, here are four things to do when you really (really, really), don’t want to workout.
1. Put on Gym Clothes
I have found that if I get dressed as if I was going to workout (which isn’t difficult, because most days, workout clothes are what I wear), I’m halfway there. Is it tempting to then flop on the couch and turn on Netflix? Yes. Should you? No. Grab your shoes and take a step outside, before you know it, you’ll figure you might as well make your way to the gym. After all, it’s only an hour or so.
2. Find Accountability
Whether it’s calling up a friend, hiring a trainer, posting on Facebook that you need someone to convince you to work out, dragging your significant other to the gym with you, or taking an extra long walk/run with the dog, having a gym buddy and a plan will help you get your butt in gear even when you don’t feel like it. (You don’t know how many 6 am runs where my running buddy and I DIDN’T want to be there and were vocal about it).
*Bonus Tip* Follow bodybuilders on Instagram. It’s motivating (at least for me) to scroll through my IG feed and see super fit people, doing what else? Working out.
3. Try Something New
After months of grueling marathon training, I really needed a break from running. To keep strength in my legs and my endurance up for my next race, I started spinning again. I will also be checking out a few new workouts in the next few weeks at some of the gyms in the fitted network and maybe get hooked on the latest workout craze! (After all, it was Zumba that initially got me off an eight year work out drought).

4. Do It Anyway!
There are lots of things in life we don’t want to do…go to work, visit the dentist, get the oil change in the car, but we do them anyway. In the long run, we are happier for doing so (or at least we don’t face the consequences of being fired, cavities, or car problems). Sometimes the only way to get over the unmotivated slump is to suck it up and do it. After you’re done, you’ll be happy that you did.
