I’ve always said that I could totally stick to a diet if I just had a chef preparing healthy, delicious meals for me every single day, and according to my dietary specifications. Well, that theory was put to the test this month as I tried out the magical, sanity saving world of a meal prep delivery service.
The Dreaded Meal Prep Day
Tell me if this sounds familiar. You have a relaxing Sunday planned, maybe a walk on the beach, devouring your long awaited cheat meal, and staving off Monday and the looming work week ahead. As you sit on your couch watching Netflix, you suddenly remember with a groan, you still have to slave away FOR HOURS in the kitchen to prep your lunches for the coming week; more chicken breasts, brown rice, and steamed broccoli. Yum.
Not only was I tired of eating the same boring meal for lunch every day, no matter how I changed up the spices, it all eventually tasted the same. At least lunch was ready to go every day. Dinner was another story. Growing up with a dad who was a chef and parents who owned a restaurant, the first meal I made by myself was when I was 18 years old – a freshman in college – and it was Kraft’s Macaroni and Cheese (I fancied it up with some Tapatio). So, I never really learned how to cook, but I somehow managed to survive and feed a few mouths over the last few decades. None of it brought me any satisfaction or happiness, though – you know those people that cook for fun and relaxation? That is the opposite of me. Cook for me is a chore, something that must be done. I hated working all day, then coming home exhausted and still having to prepare dinner, then clean everything up. Over the years, we ended up eating out a lot, but not only was it expensive, it also was not very healthy either.
So, I had to find another solution. I had seen some of my Instagram friends post about getting meals delivered to them, but they looked like it was the same brown rice and boiled chicken that I made in bulk in my kitchen on Sundays. Gag. I mean, it would save me the time in meal prep and shopping for the food. I toyed around with the idea in my head for a while but decided that I might as well just make my own chicken and brown rice. Then two people I trust, my chiropractor and my nutritionist, recommended that I try California Creationz. California Creationz is a full-service catering company but has branched out into offering packaged meal plans. Called California Fit Club, their meal prep service is quite different from the others that I’ve seen.
What’s Different About California Creationz
Right away I noticed that I wasn’t going to get chicken and brown rice. THANK GOD! For instance, last week, I had this delicious bison, sauteed with some homemade sauce, and spaghetti squash for the dinner meal. Another favorite was a cauliflower crusted lasagna, paired with sauteed squash. It’s not a surprise that every meal is delicious since all the meals are made by professional chefs. The sauces and dressings that come in the meals are all made from scratch. This makes something simple as a chicken and fresh fig spinach salad with a vinaigrette (one of last week’s lunches) mouthwateringly delicious.
Two to three times a week, I come back from my run and on my doorstep, like manna from heaven, is a bag of ready-made meals for the whole family. Even my 10-year-old thinks the food is tasty.
The best part is that all of the California Fit Club meals are paleo friendly and have the perfect balance of macros: 40% carbohydrates from fresh fruits and vegetables, 30% lean proteins, and 40% healthy fats. No more calculating, trying to figure out how to balance your macros properly, or having to tediously enter everything you eat on your MyFitnessPal app. All the products that California Creationz uses are sourced locally and plans to have a completely organic line are in the works!
What I Love About California Creationz
- They deliver twice a week, so my meals are always fresh
- Menus have a lot of variety, are tasty, and you can tell that the company takes pride in their culinary creations
- No more macro counting – it’s all done for you
- They avoid gluten, grains, dairy, and sugars in their meals and sauces
- Locally sourced food
What I Dislike
- Getting used to not eating bad carbs is rough
- They deliver M-F; left to my own devices on the weekends, I just want Del Taco burritos
- Did I mention no bad carbs?
How Much Does It Cost?
Depending on how many meals you want, you can get your meals for around $8 a meal, which means I’m actually saving money. After calculating it all out, I figure I’m saving 17-20 hours a week in hunting for healthy, tasty recipes, meal planning, grocery shopping at three different grocery stores, meal prep, cooking, and cleaning up. Those 17-20 hours could be spent on working and making more money (I’m a freelancer, so I get paid only when I’m actually working).
Also, at around $8, I’m saving money by not buying random items from the grocery store or going out to lunch all the time because last night’s leftovers don’t sound appetizing.
I feel like I finally have my own personal chef. Just to clarify, this is NOT a meal prep kit. They don’t just throw a box of ingredients on your doorstep and expect you to do all the hard work to make the meal. As easy as a kit may sound, for someone who doesn’t enjoy cooking and is particularly terrible at it, meal prep kits are pointless. I may as well run to the store myself after scouring Pinterest for recipes.
California Creationz is a company that delivers ready-to-eat, chef prepared meals. Trust me, having meals ready to go at any time, is a godsend for this busy working single mom.
