5 Low Calorie Cocktail Ideas For 4th of July (And Any Time!)

Summer is here, which means plenty of opportunities to celebrate with a delicious cocktail. Unfortunately, all those empty calories can creep up on you especially if you’re celebrating with friends. If you want to have fun drinking this 4th of July without completely derailing your diet, here are five low-calorie cocktail options for you to try.

1. Low Carb Beer

Low carb beer, also known as light beer, has the same alcohol content but fewer carbohydrates, so it’s the smart choice. Many of the most popular beers on the market have a light option – Miller Light, Bud Light, Michelob Ultra and my favorite Trader Jose’s Light – are a few.

2. Skinny Margarita

Who doesn’t love a nice cold margarita to celebrate summer…or Tuesday? I’m guessing anyone who doesn’t want to gain weight. A typical margarita runs about to 250 calories and is chock full of sugar. Make your own margarita with Baja Bob’s Sugar-Free Margarita Mix, which has ZERO carbs and ZERO calories. All you need to add is Tequila (typically 1.5 ounces-97 calories) salt, a lime, and ice and you have a low-calorie cocktail on your hands.

3. Guilt Free Vodka Fusion

Most alcohol turns out being just shy of 100 calories when it’s on its own. When you mix in all the extras, that’s when you start piling on the calories. Try avoiding all the syrups and additives and keep it simple. For a guilt free martini, go for a fruit fusion. Soak fresh raspberries, watermelon, strawberries or blueberries in your vodka overnight and when you wake up, you will have a delicious refreshing cocktail that won’t pack on the pounds.

4. Diet Mixer

If you happen to be a big fan of mixing your alcohol with sweet soda, all you have to do is replace your high-calorie soda mixer with a lower calorie diet soda mixer. Your main calories with those mixed drinks are coming from the sugary drinks – soda, fruit juice, punches – you blend in with the alcohol to make it taste so good. A Rum and Coke is 168 calories while Rum and Diet Coke is only 100 calories. Once you mix in the alcohol, it doesn’t taste much different and once you have had a full drink, your taste buds and judgment are pretty numb anyhow. Just be careful when consuming diet drinks; the artificial sugar isn’t good for you. Everything in moderation.

5. Water or Soda Water

I know water and soda water are not cocktails, but they can be very good spacers between each drink and will slow your caloric intake. Between each cocktail, order a no calorie drink like water with lemon or soda water with a sprig of mint and lime squeezed in. This will fill you up, keep you hydrated and make you less likely to down another 100 calories in minutes. Plus it will help with alleviating hangover symptoms the next day.

It’s not just the calories you are taking in when you are drinking that can make you gain weight. Remember to drink responsibly, because when you have had too much to drink you’re likely to get the munchies and head to the nearest Taco Bell drive thru at 2 am. So, this 4th of July, enjoy, but also make some good and healthier choices. Happy 4th!
